This film was adapted from the Hollywood classic "On the Waterfront" (1954) starring Marlon Brando. Vishesh Films' first production, "Kabzaa" (1988), was also based on "On The Waterfront".
This film was remade in Tamil as "Sudhandhiram" (2000).
Aamir Khan himself performed the famous stunt of his character in this film running towards a moving train. He apparently jumped off the rail just seconds before the train would have hit him. He acknowledged later that he had taken an unnecessary risk for this scene.
Aamir Khan didn't wash his face for eight days to get the right look for the film's climax in which he is beaten up by the villain played by Sharat Saxena.
Rani Mukherjee's lines in this film were dubbed by a voice artist. Her co-star Aamir Khan and filmmakers Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt felt that her unconventional voice would not work for the film's heroine and informed her that they'd be using a voice artist instead. However, she delivered her own lines in her breakout film "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" (1998), which was shot around the same time and released a few months later. After watching "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" (1998), Aamir Khan called Rani up to tell her that they had made a "huge mistake" by not letting her dub her lines.
